Primary Care

The first examination you will receive is the Comprehensive Primary Care Examination. In this examination, your current vision and eye health status will be thoroughly evaluated. This information will be used during future eye examinations, and will enable your clinician to get a more accurate view of how your eyes may be changing over time. Depending on your specific needs, you may be referred to one of the specialty services within the Center for Eye Care.

What do we mean by comprehensive?

A comprehensive eye exam includes tests of visual acuity at distance and near point, a determination of refractive error and the need for glasses, a thorough analysis of binocular vision and eye movement abilities, and a detailed review of eye health, both inside and outside along with a measure of pressure inside the eye.

Timothy A. Wingert, O.D., is a Professor of Optometry and Chief of Primary Care Services.

Dr. Wingert is interested in the clinical aspects of optometry and how optometric services are delivered. He is also interested in the visual demands of different occupations and the restrictions put on wearers of visual aids and protective eyewear. He is currently involved in several studies comparing the validity of clinical testing procedures and the prevalence of various vision anomalies in different populations.
